Kiki Barmpa Ph.D.
Podcast Production Manager | Science Communication Team
I am a Biologist who specializes in the Neurobiology of Neurodegenerative diseases. My journey began with a B.Sc. in Biology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), specializing in Genetics, Molecular, and Developmental Biology. I continued my studies at the University of Edinburgh (UK) with an M.Sc. in Biotechnology, where I focused on genetic modification through CRISPR/Cas9. After that, research brought me to Luxembourg, to the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, where I initially joined as a Research Assistant, focusing on the genetic modification of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), as well as on the analysis of organoids and neuronal cultures associated with Parkinson’s disease. After two years in this position, I pursued my doctoral studies, with my research centered on the development of novel 3D in vitro models for Parkinson’s disease studies, as well as on the cellular and molecular analysis of striatum organoids carrying Parkinson's disease-related mutations. After my Ph.D., I continue my research in Switzerland, at Roche in the Department of Neuroscience and Rare Diseases.
My role at Greek Women in STEM is to contribute to science communication as a Lead and Producer in the Podcast team, and also as a content editor for the magazine. The decision to join this team was driven by my need to offer my current experience and knowledge to the younger generations and to provide information that I once found difficult to find at a certain point in my life. Additionally, with the rapid advancement of science and the abundance of information, I believe that all scientists have a duty to actively participate in communicating science in a simple and precise manner.
And because life needs variety, beyond my professional and volunteer duties, music, especially the piano, is a significant part of my life, as are outdoor activities, photography, and of course, travelling!
